Let's face it, our days are filled with mundane activity. You may sit at a computer filling out forms all day. The regular activities we pursue are hardly stimulating, and that can actually be bad for our overall health. Studies have shown that people who keep their minds sharp and active throughout their lives live longer, and avoid many of the diseases that old age can bring. So how do people keep their minds stimulated in an increasingly automated world?

Well, the first thing anyone wishing to keep their minds sharp needs to do is find an activity that you enjoy. While regularly reading a magazine which talks about the newest applications and other industrial secrets may work for one person, it may not work for the next. However, the important aspect here is the reading part. Finding a publication you enjoy reading, or just regularly engaging with books or the newspaper, is one way to keep your mind stimulated.

Some people don't enjoy reading at all, preferring a more active style of mind stimulation. For these, working with numbers or puzzles can be effective ways to keep sharp. You might want to think about learning how the stock market works, calculating which in the listings are good investments and how the numbers determining that are worked out. Or, you could turn to the puzzle section and take on puzzles at increasingly complex levels.

Hobbies are another great way to keep one's mind stimulated. They give you a chance to learn about something new as well as develop a skill and interest in that thing. You might decide that as your hobby, you are going to design clothes. As it becomes more involved, you will find your mind engages with it more and stays sharp. Hobbies are great because they can last a lifetime, and there is always more to learn.

You can also take in physical food for your mind to keep it sharp. One of the most well known liquid fuels for a person's mind is coffee. While there has been some doubt about coffee's health, recent studies have been suggesting that coffee may actual be good for the long term health of your mind. It doesn't just help wake you up in the morning before your day in the office, it may actually prevent Alzheimer's and other old age conditions as well. It's a great liquid treat to keep your mind stimulated both long and short term.
